Winter dressing has a reputation for being the season you give up on style. It shouldn't be. Cold weather actually narrows the decisions: you need a coat, something warm next to the skin, a layer in between and a pair of boots that can handle wet pavement. Choose those four things well and almost every outfit takes care of itself. Choose them badly and no amount of accessorizing will rescue a puffy, shapeless silhouette.

What follows is the short version of the winter wardrobe: the pieces that do the most work, and ten combinations that keep appearing on the boards people save as the temperature falls.

Start with the coat

In winter, the coat is the outfit. It is what people see on the street, in the doorway and in nearly every photo between November and March, so it deserves the largest share of the budget.

Length

A coat that falls below the knee is warmer, looks more deliberate and covers whatever is underneath, which means the outfit beneath it can be simpler. Mid-calf is the most flattering length for most heights because it leaves a little of the boot showing.

Fabric

Look for a high wool content, ideally 80 percent or more, or a wool and cashmere blend. Polyester-heavy coats look fine on the hanger and pill within a season. A dense, slightly heavy cloth will drape better and keep its shape at the shoulder.

Color

Camel, charcoal, black and ivory each work with nearly everything. If you can own only one, camel is the most forgiving: it warms the face and looks good over black, grey, navy and denim.

Knitwear that earns its place

A good sweater is the second investment. Cashmere is the obvious choice, but quality varies enormously. Hold it up to the light: a well-made knit is dense and even, and it springs back when you stretch it. Thin, see-through cashmere will pill at the elbows and underarms almost immediately.

Merino is the practical alternative. It is warm, breathable, washes more easily and comes in finer gauges that layer under a blazer without bulk. Build around three shapes: a fine turtleneck, a crewneck in a mid-weight and one chunky cable or rib knit for weekends.

How to layer without bulk

The trick is to go from thinnest to thickest and to keep each layer close to the body except the last one. A fine merino turtleneck, then a tailored blazer or a cardigan, then the coat. Each layer should be thinner than the one on top of it. If two thick layers meet, the outfit stops looking intentional and the coat stops closing properly.

Keep color simple while you layer. Tonal outfits, cream on oatmeal on camel or grey on charcoal on black, look calm and expensive, and they hide the seams where one piece ends and the next begins.

The ten formulas

1. Camel coat, black everythingBlack turtleneck, black straight-leg trousers, black leather boots and a long camel coat over the top. The most reliable winter outfit there is, and it works from the office to dinner.
2. Tonal creamAn ivory cable knit, cream wide-leg trousers or jeans, and an ivory or oatmeal coat. Finish with a brown boot and a tan bag so it doesn't wash out.
3. The tweed blazer under the coatA fine turtleneck under a tweed or herringbone blazer, dark denim and knee-high boots. Take the coat off and you are still dressed.
4. Knit dress and tall bootsA ribbed knit midi dress in grey, chocolate or black, with knee-high boots that meet the hem and a long coat. Warm, one piece, no thought required.
5. The chunky sweater and the satin skirtAn oversized cream or chocolate knit over a bias-cut satin midi, with a heeled boot. The contrast of textures is what makes it look considered.
6. Grey on greyA charcoal coat, a light grey crewneck and grey wool trousers, with a black loafer and a black bag. Quiet, polished and good on dark winter days.
7. The weekend uniformA navy or cream crewneck, straight-leg jeans, a shearling-lined suede jacket and a flat leather boot. Add a cashmere scarf and you are done.
8. Burgundy for colorA burgundy knit with black trousers or a black skirt and tights. It adds warmth without breaking a mostly neutral wardrobe.
9. The long cardigan as a coatFor mild days or travel, a long, heavy cardigan belted over a turtleneck and wide-leg trousers. It packs into a carry-on and doubles as a blanket on a plane.
10. The evening winter lookA black knit top tucked into a long skirt in velvet or wool, sheer black tights and a sleek boot, under a dark coat. Dressy without being cold.

Boots that last the season

Winter is hard on footwear. Salt, slush and rain will ruin a cheap boot in a few weeks. Look for full-grain leather or a treated suede, a sole that can be replaced by a cobbler, and a stacked or rubber heel rather than a thin one. A lug sole on a classic ankle boot is the most practical choice for wet cities; a smooth knee-high boot is the one that makes outfits look finished.

Protect leather and suede with a spray before the first wear, and wipe salt off the same day. A boot cared for this way will last many winters.

The finishing pieces

Scarves

A large cashmere or wool scarf in a neutral, or one with a classic check, does more for a winter outfit than any piece of jewelry. Wrap it once and leave the ends long under an open coat.

Gloves and hats

Leather gloves lined in cashmere or wool, and a ribbed beanie in the same color as the scarf. Matching the two keeps the outfit tidy.

Bags

A structured leather shoulder bag in black or brown that sits comfortably over a thick coat. Winter is not the season for a tiny top-handle you need to hold.

Winter Outfits for Women

Long camel and ivory coats, turtlenecks under tweed blazers, and knee-high leather boots over dark denim. The palette stays quiet, oatmeal, chocolate, grey and black, so one beautiful coat does most of the work.
