The holiday calendar asks for more range than any other time of year: an office party on a weeknight, a long dinner, a cocktail invitation, and New Year's Eve, which forgives almost nothing understated. The good news is that the season runs on a short list of fabrics and shapes. Get those right and you can dress for all of it with a handful of pieces.

The eight looks

1. The velvet blazer, done properlyA jewel-tone velvet blazer over a silk camisole, straight-leg trousers and a pointed pump. It works at the office party and still holds up at dinner.
2. The slip dress with a long coatA bias-cut satin slip dress under a camel or black wool coat, finished with a slim strappy sandal. The coat carries it from the street to the room.
3. Sequins, but only one pieceA sequinned skirt or top paired with something plain: fine-gauge cashmere with a sequin midi, or a sequin shell with tailored black trousers. One shine, everything else quiet.
4. The little black dress, sharpenedA structured black dress with one strong detail, such as a bow, a sculpted shoulder or a deep back, worn with sheer black tights and a slingback.
5. The tuxedo suitA black or midnight tuxedo suit with nothing underneath but a lace bralette or a silk shell, plus a loafer or a mule. The most reliable New Year's Eve option there is.
6. Red, head to toeA red knit dress or a red satin set, with a gold earring and a neutral heel. Pinterest's holiday boards are full of red this season, and it photographs well in every light.
7. The knit and the satin skirtA chunky cream or chocolate sweater over a satin midi skirt, with a knee-high boot. Right for a dinner at home or a party where the dress code is "festive".
8. Lace, with restraintA black lace top or dress with tailored, matte pieces around it. Lace is one of the defining details of the year; keeping the rest of the outfit plain is what makes it look expensive.

The finishing pieces

Shoes

A pointed slingback, a strappy sandal and a sleek knee boot cover nearly every look above. If you buy one pair for the season, a black satin or patent pump goes with all eight.

Bags

A small structured top-handle bag or an embellished clutch. Evening bags are back in a big way this season: beaded, crystal and metallic finishes are everywhere, and they lift the plainest dress.

Jewelry

Gold, and more of it than usual: a stacked set of bangles, a bold earring, a brooch on a lapel or a coat. Brooches in particular have returned as a styling trick worth stealing.

How to choose

Start with the event you have the least to wear for, buy for that, and make sure the piece works for at least one other invitation. The velvet blazer, the slip dress and the tuxedo suit each cover three or more of the season's occasions on their own.
