The tote and the top-handle bag get most of the attention, but the bags most people actually carry every day are smaller and simpler. These three shapes cover errands, evenings and weekends, and each one solves a different problem.
The crossbody
The crossbody leaves both hands free and keeps your things in front of you, which makes it the best bag for travel, cities and busy days. Crescent and half-moon shapes are popular right now; a small rectangular camera bag is the most practical.
What to check
- An adjustable strap long enough to wear across the body over a coat.
- A zip or a secure flap, not just a magnetic snap.
- Room for a phone, cards, keys and a lipstick: if those four do not fit, it is too small.
The clutch
The clutch is the evening bag. Without a strap it forces you to carry only what matters, and it photographs beautifully. A flat leather pouch in burgundy, black or tan works for dinners as well as weddings; satin, beading and metallics are for black-tie.

What to check
Look for a hand strap or a hidden chain so it is not in your hand all night, and a size that holds a phone flat. Grained leather hides scratches far better than smooth.
The bucket bag
The bucket bag is soft, roomy and relaxed, with a drawstring or a simple open top. It holds more than it looks, slumps a little as you wear it, and suits weekend outfits better than structured bags. A chain strap dresses it up for the evening.

What to check
An inside pocket or pouch, because everything sinks to the bottom of a bucket bag. A flat, reinforced base keeps it standing.
Which shape for you
If you only buy one, buy the crossbody: it works the most days. Add a clutch for evenings, and a bucket bag when you want something softer than a tote. Choose leather in a color you already wear often, such as tan, black, cream or olive, and the bag will go with almost everything.
